Central Catholic Beats Penn Hills After Wild Last Play

I often talk about WPIAL sports on my radio shows. Why? Because they are the backbone of so many of the best experiences for high school kids in our area. Couldn't pass up the chance to post about this wild ending last night in the Central/Penn Hills game. A last second field goal attempt gets blocked, Penn Hills celebrates - only to be disappointed when they see a bunch of Central players sprinting toward the endzone. Wild stuff!

But the major debate online today is whether the touchdown should have counted at all. I see lots of people arguing that the ball travels beyond the line of scrimmage, which I suppose makes it a dead ball that can't be recovered by the offense? Seriously there are tons of people pulling our the rulebook - just read through the comments and replies on the tweets above to see for yourself. I'm no PIAA rules expert, but it seems like a damn close call to make in a live setting. Yes we have the benefit of replay - but high school referees do not.

Wild situation either way - excited for all the WPIAL football playoff action to start taking shape in the weeks ahead!
