Google Maps Ends Up Stranding Drivers In The Desert

A group of Los Angeles residents say they got stranded in the desert after Google Maps took them off-roading.

Shelby Easler told “SFGate” that she, her brother Austin, and their significant others were on their way home from Las Vegas on Sunday when Google Maps suggested an alternative route due to traffic delays caused by a dust storm.

The new route ended up leading them through an unpaved road in the desert.

Shelby posted the off-road adventure drama on TikTok, showing a long line of cars making the same mistake. They ended up calling 9-1-1 after several hours because they were bogged down in the muddy road and it was getting late, but because the freeway was shut down, the California Highway Patrol couldn't get to them.

They eventually got unstuck and had their car towed. Shelby said the car was "destroyed."
