This news might actually be confusing to some because news broke last month that all tenants were ordered to leave Century III mall within 30 days. The exception to the evictions were the two anchor stores remaining, which included Dick's Sporting Goods and JC Penney. These stores were allowed to continue operations because they have their own essential systems and external mall entrances.
Today we found out that Dick's will be closing at the end of March, which means that the only thing left in this historic mall is JC Penney. There have been rumors that Dick's would relocate to the old Kmart building about a mile down route 51, but as of now that only seems to be a rumor and nothing realistic. I would hate to see the area lose the store altogether, because that would mean that local residents would have to either travel out of their way to the Waterfront, South Hills Village or Monroeville.
The Century III Mall story is far from over. I just hope it doesn't sit vacant for 10 years before someone figures it out.
