In one of the more stunning moves I have seen in Western PA sports, Pine-Richland has reportedly fired extremely sucessful football coach Eric Kasperowicz and his entire staff. In his time as the head coach of that program, he captured 4 WPIAL titles, 2 State Championships and has developed many young athletes that eventually went on to play NCAA football and in the NFL. Over the course of 8 seasons, he lost just 18 games....18!
While it is unclear why this decision was made, plenty of people have speculated on social media in the hours since this news leaked out. Nothing has been confirmed, but from what I have seen so far it seems like the reasons behind this change are weak at best. Here is what some people are saying about this news:
Some former Pine-Richland football players have already weighed in on this incident.
Other community members are weighing in as well.
I am sure that we will learn more about the reasons behind this in the coming weeks, but this is just another story that makes me realize that high school sports are MUCH MUCH different than they used to be. Once upon a time coaches were there to push kids, build team bonds and lead them in their sport and in life. Now it's purely political, parent-driven craziness that makes me sad for any future kid that wont get to experience things the same way a lot of us used to.
